Words from the Artistic Director

As the leading venue for performing arts in Taiwan, the NTCH launched the first Taiwan International Festival of Arts (TIFA) in 2009, and has since then continued to present programs that guide the trend for the development of performing arts at this annual event in the early spring. For the past six years, the NTCH has successfully expanded the audiences' perspectives with “vision of the future” and impressed them with numerous stunning moments, thereby formulating precious common memories for all of us. We take pride in the achievements very much!

After the establishment of the National Performing Arts Center (NPAC), the 2015 TIFA will mark a new milestone for the NTCH. In addition to continuing with the NTCH’s trademark for its unlimited imagination and creative capacity that outstands not only in Asia but also in the world, we hope to progressviely infuse new energy and to expand the brand of NTCH. With further open-mindedness and out-of-the-box thinking, we incorporate artists’ ideas and audiences’ expectation to transform the TIFA, the largest arts festival in Taiwan as well as the highly-acclaimed one worldwide, and to introduce fresh blood for the development of performing arts in Taiwan so as to respond to the pulse of the world.

The wave of digital arts overwhelms the world and thereby changes the social, cultural and economic developments. Concepts of diversity become the mainstream for artists throughout the globe, and the trend for trans-disciplinary and diversified programs has been widely adopted by the world’s major international arts festivals. As a result, we decide, from the perspective of diversification, to break the audio-and-visual dichotomy in traditional programs such as drama, dance and music while conceiving the 2015 TIFA. With the theme of “Turbo Sensation”, the 2015 TIFA offers the world-class cast and macroscopic perspective to re-discover the unlimited and immense world of performing arts. From February 26 to April 12, a total of 54 performances of 17 outstanding programs from 12 countries will fully demonstrate the amazing responsiveness of the NTCH and lead audiences to experience the latest trend of performing arts in the world, aiming to overturn their conception and to re-define performing arts.

This year’s TIFA offers a wide range of programs with further depth. Works by globally-renowned masters both from Taiwan and abroad, such as Pina Bausch, Yukio Ninagawa, Wang Chia-ming, Pei Yan-ling and Tan Dun, will be presented in front of the audiences in Taiwan. Furthermore, Hotel Pro Forma, the Scandinavian avant-garde opera company which has taken the European audiences by storm with its visual operas, is introduced to Taiwan for the first time. Of course, we have also arranged programs suitable for audiences across the age spectrum. We hope that all of the audiences will have in-depth experiences with different forms of performing arts.

The new logo for the 2015 TIFA also demonstrates the NTCH’s resolution to re-launch again! You are therefore cordially invited to open your minds and join us in experiencing the impacts of “Turbo Sensation” and to relish the unique perspectives of contemporary artists.
