Tracing the Original Roots of Chinese Traditional Theater and Discovering Its True Beauty

Pei Yan-ling, master of Chinese traditional theater, will present four famous traditional excerpts featuring martial classics in Kunqu Opera for her visiting Taiwan again. With no stage make-up, costumes or sets, she will give the most honest reveal of how she interprets the iconic roles of Lin Chong, Shi Xiu, Nazha and Wu Song. In addition, she also presents Hongyangdong, a piece highlighting the artist’s singing skills and capability the most in Peking Opera.

Inspired by famous theater director Lin Zhuo-hua, Pei Yan-ling presents The True Beauty of Chinese Traditional Theatre with a unique form of performing to showcase the essence of skills for a traditional theater artist. With simply a turn, a movement or even a look, Pei is able to present different characters on the stage. All of the theatrical essences and beauty are concentrated on the artist. With this production, Pei aims to show the importance of basic trainings for a Chinese theater artist and that the traditional Chinese theater takes its roots neither in the beautiful package nor in the forms, whether they are renovated or traditional, but instead in characters. She will lead the audiences to trace the original roots of the traditional Chinese theater and discover its true beauty.
