Two scripts within one play, the intertwining of disputes and craving
A play about the inevitable, desire, sensation, illusion and other people’s loss.
Les Écorchés is a play made of two plays, Disputes (1744) by French playwright Pierre de Marivaux and Crave (1998) by British playwright Sarah Kane, both of which are classics in revealing the essence of cruelty in life. The former is a fable, which starts with the encounter of several innocent young men and women, while the latter is like a complete cantata with SATB, in which several characters without names develop complicated relations among themselves. They share the common past with each other, but at the same time, confront with each other. Their intricate romance reveals the non-existence of “happy love”, which everyone craves for.
On the same stage, two sets of several characters in two different plays are played by the same cast. By such arrangement, the director aims to expose the sexual nature in different aspects of love. From sufferings to pains, a history of human beings is the history of tears. Craving is bound to be the evitable result of disputes. Just like the adult characters they pry into in the play, the audiences eventually find themselves, one after the other, estranged from but also immersed in the context of coldness, brutality, violence and depression.
