The forbidden love leading to cold-blood and violent murder
The stage setting for ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore is a bedroom decorated in flaming red, in which the forbidden love between brother and sister leads to cold-blood murder.
Giovanni falls in love with his sister Annabella, but their father makes the arrangement for her to marry Soranzo. Upon hearing about the marriage, Soranzo’s former lover swears to revenge. Meanwhile, Annabella, now pregnant with her brother’s child, regrets the incestuous relations and wants to end the affair. She tries in vain to renounce the vow they have made to each other in hopes that everything would be back to normal. But who is going to die in this room? Is it Satan’s game or God’s punishment? Death is in wait at the end of the darkness and murders are ready to be printed on the front page.
Olivier Award winner Declan Donnellan and designer Nick Ormerod set an old story in the modern context, fusing classic texts with contemporary elements and bringing new life into the audacious play written by John Ford in the 17th century. Donnellan’s precise and fresh dramatic rhythm further adds sexy and fashionable flavors to this controversial work.
Artists
Declan Donnellan, the director, founded Cheek by Jowl with Nick Ormerod in 1981. Both of them jointly serve as the company’s artistic director. Declan Donnellan has been invited to direct for the Avignon Festival, the Salzburg Festival and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and has won three Laurence Olivier Awards. He has also been awarded a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and the Golden Mask Award in Russia. The Twelfth Night and The Tempest, two plays he directs for the Chekhov International Theatre Festival in Russia, have toured to Taiwan and won the audiences’ acclamation.
