Three Works by Two Dance Companies on One Stage
Collaboration between Taiwan and Germany to Amaze Audiences

The Century Contemporary Dance Company and the Leipzig Ballet collaborate to present three works on one stage. Mario Schröder, artistic director and chief choreographer of Leipzig Ballet, creates Wild Butterflies for the Century Contemporary Dance Company, a brand-new choreography that combines essences from classic, hip hop, martial arts, ballet and modern dance. Using butterflies as a metaphor, the choreographer describes his observation in Taiwan from the sunrise to the sunset, and presents a typical day in Taiwan as seen in his eyes.

Along with the choreographer, the Leipzig Ballet is to present “Corrente II”, the third act of “Ein Liebestraum” (A Dream of Love). To the music of Magnus Lindberg and Richard Wagner, Mario Schröder creates a dream-like scenario to interpret the complicated love that is difficult to express either in the verbal or physical form.

Yao Shu-fen and the Century Contemporary Dance Company will also re-interpret her choreography work, “Les Noces”, winner of the 9th Taishin Arts Award for the performing arts. A combination of painting, oratorio and modern dance, this performance is a brave experiment to challenge various physical vocabularies and to break through the existing mainstream aesthetic standards and gender restriction.

Yao Shu-fen

Yao Shu-fen, a master of using dance movement to convey theatrical tension. Her friends often call her “Choreographer that breathes with her pores.” Yao may have changed her creative styles along with the development of her career, but the main concern to reflect our time and the relationship between humanity and the environment remains unchanged. She takes the details of life as her inspiration, using the style of magic realism to create three-dimensional collages.

Mario Schröder

Mario Schröder, artistic director and chief choreographer of Leipzig Ballet, has been writing his life with ballet and created more than 80 pieces of dances, winning him numerous awards. Schröder is particularly known for his large-scale choreography, focusing on skillful physical movements and creating scenes that strike a chord with audiences.
