Fusion of Animation and Theater Arts
A Jaw Dropping Creepy Fun

Sometime in the future, Robert Robertson buys a man-like figure, “Golem.” Robertson is apprehensive at first, but anxiety is soon replaced with excitement as Golem starts to make life easier, more comfortable. Robertson becomes more relaxed, confident and happier. He is a modern man with his very own Golem, and he is in control…or is he?

“Golem” is a legendary figure of Jewish folklore, a human form made out of a base substance, clay. Legend has it that the Golem becomes animate when a specific mystic text is placed between its teeth, and obeys its owner’s every command. “Golem” is the archetype for Frankenstein, visualizing human beings’ terror and anxiety for the backlash of the man-made world.

The London-based company 1927, who will have their Taiwan debut, stems the inspiration from the ancient legend and creates a brand-new story. Golem, a co-production of 1927, Salzburg Festival, Young Vic (London) and Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), which combines live music, performance, illustrated animation and claymation, integrating reality and fiction with a style that recalls comic strips. Its premiere at the 2014 Salzburg Festival wowed audiences and critics alike. It approaches a philosophical question: in the future world of artificial intelligence, the danger lies not in that machine becomes more like man, but man becomes more like machine.
