Taiwan Director Wang Mo-lin with Crew from Macao
A Brand-new Production to Pay Homage to Theater Master

What is “Home”? In Long Day’s Journey into Night, the autobiographical masterwork by celebrated American playwright Eugene O’Neill and “a play of old sorrow, written in tears and blood”, the Noble laureate exposes us to the nature of “Home”: Home—the co-existence of mutual reliance and struggle, of difficult love and solid hate; Home—a place of complex relationships and affairs, a place you know well but sometimes want to escape.

In 2013, the 60th anniversary of O’Neill’s death (1888-1953), Taiwan theatre director Wang Mo-lin re-examined his classics and biographies, and produced a whole new text Wall of Fog performed in the 2013 Macao Arts Festival. Along with a cast and crew from Taiwan and Macao, Wang presents us with unique performing aesthetic and an opportunity for intellectual introspection, initiating a brand new dialogue between audience and stage. Aside from the strong sense of detachment and psychological isolation, it also tells the most subtle understanding of the quintessence of this long-lived play.

This cross-cultural context is like a dialogue between two souls apart from each other in different time and space. For the 2015 Taiwan International Festival of Arts as well as its Asian tour, the Body Phase Studio produced a new version of Wall of Fog, leading the audiences to experience the cross-cultural amazement with whole new visual images.

Wang Mo-lin

director and playwright, is a senior theater and cultural critic as well as the forerunner of the small theater movement in Taiwan. His works, either adaptation of classics or original creations, showcase the dark side of humanity and history through vigorous dialogues with the reality in the society, reflecting the author’s world view. “Existence” is the keyword to his works as if a secret code embedded between society and nation.
