Dignified Voice with Powerful Emotions
Amira Medunjanin, the Bosnian Billie Holiday
Presents Flawless Balkans Voice

In recent years, Bosnia female singer Amira Medunjanin, an outstanding successor of the Bosnian traditional music Sevdah, has become one of the most important voices of the Balkans, a territory formerly torn at war. The word Sevdah is derived from Turkish, meaning “love, hopeless love and desire.”

Her works are of mixed elements from Bosnian folk songs as well as songs from Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo. She also deftly infuses contemporary elements, such as jazz, into the Balkans traditional music, and uses both traditional music instruments as well as modern ones, such as harmonica, classic guitar and cello, thus finding new contexts and forms in a tradition that is hundreds of years old. Medunjanin’s music features the Southeast European characteristics and also showcases the influence of American blues. Her dignified voice is as smooth as silk yet at the same time as solid as rock, and is able to interpret the strength of fearless emotions. In the form of a trio, Amira Medunjanin will present the voice of Balkans to the audiences in Taiwan.
