Contemporary Legend Theatre Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Shakespeare’s Classic Romantic Comedy

“The scale of the show is epic.” – Wall Street Journal

Contemporary Legend Theatre successfully blends the techniques of traditional Peking Opera with the western classics, and subverts the theatres of both the East and the West. The cross-cultural theatrical aesthetics transcends national boundaries and has won the highest acclaim internationally. Following the classics such as The Kingdom of Desire(adapted from Macbeth), War and Eternity(adapted from Hamlet), and Medea, Wu Hsing-kuo and Wei Hai-min again jointly present A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare’s most popular play and Contemporary Legend Theatre’s first comedy, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the company. Lyrics written by Chang Da-chun re-interpret this great work with ingenious and insightful observation of human nature.

The plot surrounds the love affairs of the King and Queen of the Fairies as well as three human couples. Under the tricks played by Fairy King’s servant, Puck, the lovers are fooled around in a confounded chase of love. In particular, the play-within-a-play performed by a group of six amateur actors presents various forms of performance and reflects diverse aspects the both worlds of human beings and fairies.
