Prometheus Bound

The roar of a revolutionary hero

Asian premiere of an original masterpiece of the Greek tragedy at National Theater

Prometheus Bound is based on a work written by Aeschylus, the first librettist in his- tory. It is adapted from the Greek myth, depicting how Prometheus angered Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods, by stealing fire for human use. Filled with fury, Zeus banished Prometheus to the remote wilderness of Caucasus. He was chained to a cliff by Kratos (strength) and Bia (force), to suffer eternal punishment. However, Prometheus had a vision that Zeus will be overthrown in the future, and new conflicts and crises arose because of Prometheus’s vision…

Prometheus Bound, directed by the renowned Greek director Theodoros Terzopou- los, features actors from Greece, Turkey, and Germany. Built on novel interpretations of Greek tragedies of Terzopoulos, Prometheus Bound adopts specific designs motivated by local cultures and scenes where they are performed. The premiere of the performance was held at the Old Oil Mill of Eleusina in Athens, the hometown of Aeschylus. At the site, Kounellis designed a cataclysm, a flood of a thousand- rock installation. The shivering body and roar of the actors are impeccably profound and unforgettable. German critic says: “A very powerful approach of Aeschylian’s Prometheus Bound, with internal intensity, extreme physical energy and powerful images. “ It is a marvelous masterpiece highly applauded of.
