Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz

Der Spieler (The Gambler)

An avant-garde work of Frank Castorf, the prestigious German director of theatre

Located in the center of Berlin, the Volksbühne was built in 1913-1914 at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. In the front side of the original building the motto “Die Kunst dem Volke” (Art for the People) was engraved: a theatre for the people, for the city’s working class, inexpensive and offering an interesting program, both up-to-date and political. Led by the prestigious German director Frank Castorf, the Volksbühne will visit Taiwan for the first time and present Der Spieler (The Gambler). It is the masterpiece of gambling-addicted Fyodor Dostoyevsky, one of the greatest writers of Russia.

Based on his own experience of gambling away his last money, Der Spieler (The Gambler) was written by Dostoyevsky in twenty-six days. It depicts the penniless Alexei Ivanovich attending a traveling party held by a bankrupt Russian General and winning at the roulette table of a casino in a German town. Falling hopelessly in love with Polina, the step daughter of the General, results in his bet on love and unknown consequences. Der Spieler (The Gambler) not only gives a detailed description of gambling addiction, but also reveals the inner natures of each character.
