The sudden death of Pina Bausch in 2009 didn’t shake the Tanztheater Wuppertal’s status. Jointly led by its successive artistic directors, Dominique Mercy and Robert Sturm, the Tanztheater Wuppertal is still one of the most prestigious dance companies globally. Its attendance at the Taiwan International Arts Festival 2013 with nearly sixty artists will be their fifth time presenting Bausch’s works on local stage. It will showcase Bausch’s most beloved work Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) and Café Müller which local audience have been looking forward to watch- ing for a long time. Both Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) (1975) and Café Müller (1978) are Bausch’s earliest masterpieces. Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), with rigorous dance routines, fluent body language, and special design that requires paving the whole stage with soil, portrays Bausch’s individual and conspicuous aesthetics. While Café Müller, a representative work for her style of Tanztheater, flows with rich and intense personal emotions. They are two repertoires that witness how Bausch started a reformation to change the development of dance and theatre which influenced the world of dance decisively even to now.
