With his solo dance piece, Traverse, Shang-Chi Sun walks on a journey of a dancer’s body. To him, connection of dancer’s body is like a journey going through various psychological states. This storyless piece stuns audiences with the ongoing motions of body with such intensity. More impressive are its complicated rhythms, hard-to-count layering, and multi-structure. Aerowaves, the network of dance across Europe, lost no time to select Traverse as one of Europe’s most outstanding works in 2012.
Taking the concept of the journey of dancer’s body in Traverse as a starting point, Shang-Chi Sun extends his imagination in the newly composed Uphill. With unstopped change of movements, the bodies continue their journey through various psychological statuses. It starts from a curve in Uphill - process of the curve will cause delay; fragments of full pictures and impact of emotions will be evoked during the lag. Uphill is a danced symbiosis of physicality and immateriality. A journey through the unsaid and what is expected just before overcoming an obstacle that opens up a new reality. Uphill explores the beauty of the not yet existent.
Sun commented, “I regard this piece as the last of the trilogy also comprising Traverse and Je sans paroles. They present different timelines separately. A myth is manifested in Je sans paroles, while abstract lines and rhythms are displayed in Traverse, nevertheless, I return to focus on energy and fascination of nature’s cycle.”
