Artist TONG, Yang-tze Crosses over Visuals, Music and Theater

Calligraphy, dance, multimedia and music vivify Chinese characters Flying notes in the black box present a 3D feast

Sao is artist TONG, Yang-tze’s first crossover theatrical work after her calligraphic collaboration with Ashin from the band Mayday, architect YAO Ren-lu and pop singer CHEN Chi-chen. In tandem with choreographers Bulareyaung Pagarlava and LUO Wen-jinn, jazz trumpet player Stacey Wei and multimedia artist CHEN Yan-ren, Sao will rewrite a calligraphic movement for Taiwanese people. “Sao” also encompasses Tong’s expectations for the next generation of artists as a Chinese proverb goes, “Each generation produces its own talents who pursue restless excellence.” “Sao” also describes a rhythm and process of change. The work features restless visual curves which can be both light and heavy. A hint of animal desires and scents coexist with literary and poetic brilliance. Tong and the four young artists draw inspiration from the lines, ink tones and brush touches of Tong’s Silent Music to engage in a collaboration full of sparkles. Sao is about to ignite an improvisation of freedom, change, desire and restlessness.
