Rock, nanguan!–a theatrical fantasy of modern dancers
Small Nanguan 2 is “superb dancer” LIN Wen-chung’s latest creation and it is also a crossover collaboration of the WCdance, the musicians from the improvisation group and nanguan artists. This is Lin’s second attempt to add nanguan to his dance, in which he even boldly incorporates contemporary music as a creative element.
Small Nanguan and Small Nanguan 2 are contemporary dance pieces based on nanguan music rather than being nanguan works themselves. Just as those choreographers who integrate western classical music into their dances, Lin does not intend to deconstruct nanguan but to add its elements of charm, rhythm and gesture into modern dance to produce a unique style. Small Nanguan 2 is not about the development history and technique of nanguan but to see how nanguan influences modern dance and show a new face when East meets West.
Artists
Choreographer LIN Wen-chung spent ten years in the US as a professional dancer and has been praised by the Village Voice as a “superb dancer.” He is one of the few male Taiwanese dancers who are trained locally and make themselves known internationally. In 2008, Lin returned to Taiwan to found a dance company which bears his name. He manifests distinctive rhyme and musicality in his dances. He is a unique character in Taiwan’s dance community due to his exceptional creative approach, delicate body language and aesthetics, rhythmic movement, and cultural elements from both East and West.
