Sabine Meyer & National Symphony Orchestra

World-renowned queen of clarinet.
First female solo clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet, permeated with deep, resonant, and mellow notes, is his last instrumental work. It was written for one of Mozart’s close friends, Anton Stadler, to test the basset clarinet he had improved. Mozart wrote in his letter to Stadler, “Never would I have thought that a clarinet could be capable of imitating the human voice as deceptively as it is imitated by you. Truly your instrument has so soft and lovely a tone that nobody with a heart could resist it.” The same fascinating version we hear today is a transcription by Mozart’s publisher. Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, his last symphony written in 1885, reveals his full insight into music and is definitely a masterpiece in music history. Built on austere classical structure, it flows with natural momentum and an appealing blend of lyric and heroic elements, folk spirit, and intimacy.

“She is simply a musical and technical paragon.” The New York Sun once said. After her visit with BBC Symphony Orchestra in 2010, the world’s leading clarinet virtuoso, Sabine Meyer, returns to Taiwan to collaborate with the NSO for the first time. She will play Mozart’s clarinet concerto on a basset to demonstrate the beauty of this instrument.
